It is a family tradition that before coming to Baltimore, William Bryden lived in Salem, MA. This has not been verified. Another claim with more credibility is that he formerly lived in Philadelphia. Bryden Hyde has a parchment headed "N149" and dated 23 Mar 1790, on which William Bryden of the County of Philadelphia, Mariner took Pennsylvania's Oath of Allegiance.
However other records at this time indicate that he still maintained a residence in Scotland:
It must have been shortly afterwards that William Bryden moved to Baltimore. In the records of the First Presbyterian Church, Baltimore:
It is likely that James Veitch and Ann Veitch were closely related, but this is not known for certain.
