William Bryden

It is a family tradition that before coming to Baltimore, William Bryden lived in Salem, MA. This has not been verified. Another claim with more credibility is that he formerly lived in Philadelphia. Bryden Hyde has a parchment headed "N149" and dated 23 Mar 1790, on which William Bryden of the County of Philadelphia, Mariner took Pennsylvania's Oath of Allegiance.

However other records at this time indicate that he still maintained a residence in Scotland:

William Bryden joined the Masons in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1795.
Scottish Record Soc. Pub 46A, Canongate marriage register page 545, line 71: 6 Mar 1795 – William Bryden (mariner) m. Ann Veitch (father James, laborer), both of Abbey Hill.

It must have been shortly afterwards that William Bryden moved to Baltimore. In the records of the First Presbyterian Church, Baltimore:

Ann Veitch, daughter of Wm. and Ann Bryden, born 1 Aug, baptized 21 Sep 1797.
On 1 Dec 1797, William Bryden indentured James Veitch, both of Baltimore County, as an apprentice for a period of 5 years. (Baltimore County Indentures, Orphan's Court of Baltimore, Book 1, Folio 248-250).

It is likely that James Veitch and Ann Veitch were closely related, but this is not known for certain.
