Heart of America Free Flight Association
The Heart of American Free Flight Association is a fellowship of men and women dedicated to the sport of free flight model airplane competition. We are a chartered club of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and the Society of Ancient Modellers (SAM). Most HAFFA members belong to the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) and several members compete on a national level. HAFFA has an active indoor flying schedule during the winter months. After several years without an outdoor flying venue, we are holding our first outdoor sanctioned competition 15-16 June at the Kansas Speedway, Kansas City, KS. See Contest schedule for details.
What is Free Flight?
Free Flight Model airplanes are designed to fly by themselves once they are launched. It is the oldest form of aviation, model or otherwise. The airplane is designed to fly in a particular flight pattern and land safely after the flight. While there are many ways to divide up the kinds of airplanes that are flown in free flight, there are only two kinds of contests, indoor and outdoor.
Outdoor models are bigger and heavier than indoor models. There are many beginner's kits to choose from, but there are also many kits that will frustrate the beginner, especially scale kits. Some outdoor models. such as the Wakefield rubber-powered modell shown above, are very sophistocated. Others are very simple and can be built and flown both for fun and competition from kits costing less than $15. Or, you can buy the balsa and build from a plan for even less!
Indoor models, such as the F1D shown below, are small, delicate, and designed to fly slowly. They can be flow in any gym, with ceiling heights of as little as 20 feet. Although it takes many years of experience to build and fly the most advanced indoor models, beginners can build models that will fly for over two minutes from kits that cost less than $15.
