National
and International Organizations
National
Free Flight Society
The organization the represents free flight on a national level. If you
are even a little serious about free flight, this is the organization
for you. Membership buys 10 issues of the only monthly exclusively dedicated
to free flight. Excellent annual symposiums. If you are into competition
or flying just for fun, join NFFS.
Society
of Antique Modelers (SAM)
Many modelers enjoy
flying and competing with models from the "golden era" of model
aviation. Old-timers are fun, fly great, and the competition is low-key.
SAM events include both free flight and R/C assist, so if you insist on
controlling your plane, this is a good way to go.
Flying
Aces Club
If you are interested in free flight scale, this is the organization.
Squadrons exist in many states and countries. If you find a lack of content,
try Flying Aces
in Texas or Aero
Aces.
Academy
of Model Aviation (AMA)
The national organization the represents all model avaition, including free
flight to the National Aeronautics Association (NAA). The offical sanctioning
body for model avaition contests. Membership provides insurance that is needed
to enter contests. All regular members receive a quality monthly magazine,
Model Aviation, that has free flight columns every month and frequent articles
of interest.
FAI
The international organization that represents all avaition sports, full-scale
and models alike. Think of it as kind of anl alternate Olympics Organization
for planes and other things that fly. (Ever wonder why there are no aviation
sporting events at the Olympics? Well, there is actually a World Air Games
every four years.)
