Elk
River Hiking Trail covers 15 miles from the west edge of the
dam to the Highway 160 bridge on the Elk River. This trail meanders
through the colorful oak and hickory forest surrounding the
lake and lead the hiker through some of the most interesting
rock formations in Kansas while providing spectacular views
of the lake and Elk River. Wildlife abounds around the lake,
and includes some species moving up from the south. A quiet
hiker can see armadillo, scorpians, and centipedes as well as
wild turkey, deer, and a wide variety of songbirds.
