The 2009 Lawrence Half Marathon & 5k
has been cancelled. The organizers are not associated in any way with any other running event. . We hope to continue the event in 2010. We appreciate your past support. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsor Information Dear
Lawrence ½ Marathon and 5k Sponsor, We are excited to invite you once again to sponsor and participate in the 2009 Lawrence Half Marathon and 5k, which will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2009. This will be the third year for the run, and we have some major changes.Last year we attracted over 2000 registered runners from 17 states, making it the third largest race in Kansas. Due to your support, the race was a resounding success! The course, a
favorite of runners, will be unchanged, but our beneficiary will be
changing. Soliciting and organizing
hundreds of volunteers is a huge task and requires much time.Last year’s beneficiary, Health Care Access
Clinic, has decided that it must concentrate on providing the necessary
services for its growing numbers of uninsured, and it cannot spend the time
necessary in providing and organizing volunteers for our race. Thankfully, the
clinic is doing well financially and has been the recent recipient of several
sizeable grants. We know that the economy is taking its toll on many
of our nonprofit organizations.
Therefore, we want to “share the love” and offer some of the proceeds of
the race to the many worthy organizations in Lawrence. Our plan is to “contract out” different
volunteer sections of the race. So far
we have heard from the following Lawrence organizations: The Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity,
Headquarters, Special Olympics, Lawrence Community Shelter, CASA Inc., the
River City Cosmo Club, Lawrence Sister Cities organization, Audio Reader,
Eudora Cross Country, Lawrence High School Cross Country, Douglas County Aids
Project, GaDuGi Safe Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club,
Raintree, Women’s Transitional Care Services, The Americana Music Academy,
Friends of El Papaturro, and the Bert Nash Clinic. These organizations have been hit hard by the poor economy, and
they welcome any opportunity to earn more money and to be a part of such a
wonderful event like the Lawrence ½ Marathon and 5k. One of the race highlights for our runners was the
course. The ½ marathon ran throughout Lawrence, highlighting historic
places. Counting volunteers and
spectators, the race drew over 3500 people to Haskell Indian Nation’s campus. As race directors, our goal is to
provide our runners with a top-quality race, and our sponsors with an event
they can be proud to be associated with. The
Lawrence Half Marathon and 5k will have all of the features as in
the past: three well-run races, a
fabulous food fest, and a festive atmosphere.
These components have helped the run become the third largest running
event in Kansas, and with your support, it will continue to grow. Frankly, it
could not be done without your generous sponsorship. If
you are interested in sponsoring us, please complete and mail or email us the
following form right away. Your form may also be faxed to 785-843-3979, and
your donation sent in at a later date (we need to have all donations in by
March 1, 2009). In order to be
included on our 15,000 race entry forms, we would need to receive your sponsor
pledge form by December 1st. Remember, you can pay us with ’09 funds. You can email us at srmriley@sunflower.com.
for more information.
As
always, thank you for supporting worthy causes and for helping the Lawrence
Half Marathon and 5k become the quality event that it is.
