History of the Paranormal World

Many of these dates and facts are still conjecture, others are gleaned from various sources. While this is an overview of important events, things always more complex than they may sound here.

Approx. 100 million BC: The Olapahandar crashed on Earth.

The Olapahandar is the last artifact of an ancient civilization referred to as the Seeders. It is tied into the ley lines of Earth, primarily those of Africa, and has the potential to give those who use it godlike power The consequences of using this device are unpredictable but certainly dangerous. The need to protect the Olapahandar and keep it out of the hands of those who would use it is one of the primary areas in which the Ghost Dance and Moebius Circle will work together.
Approx. 65 million BC: The Great Extinction, ending the reign of dinosaurs. This is known to have been a combination of environmental changes and asteroid impact, but many mystics believe it was engineered by the primordial entity called the Wyrm.

Approx. 1 million BC: Commonly considered the first evidence of true Changers, now known as Bete.

This date is determined by researchers who believe the Bete required a reasonably advanced hominid and successful animal predator to create a Changing Breed. It is hotly contested by factions within the Bete and among the Circle. The Mokole, for example, claim to date back to the Cretaceous Period at the end of the Mesozoic Era, although they do not explain what sentient species served to provide their ‘humanoid’ half.

Approx. 30,000 BC: Rise of humanity. Several hominid species existed at this time, all of them with some form of culture and sentient thought. After several thousand years of competition, evolution and glaciation, only homo sapiens survived.

Approx. 25,000 BC: A few of the oldest oral traditions preserved by some Orders indicate that the first willworkers appeared during this era.

Approx. 23,000 BC: Believed by some scholars to the era when the first vampire was created.

Approx. 19,000 BC: According to the legends of the Dreamspeakers, at least two informal societies of willworkers formed in this time. These eventually inspired the Traditions of mages.

Approx. 12,000 BC: Some occult texts state small groups of vampires appeared in the world during this era.

Atlantis and Mu both vanish in the rising waters of the world's oceans during this period. They were the first and greatest of human civilizations, making technological and spiritual discoveries not repeated for millennia to come. The fragments of these societies become the seeds of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world, including Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, Toltecs, Incans, Etruscans and many others now forgotten.
Approx. 10,000 BC: The end of the Ice Age begins. In some lands, glaciation retreated in just a few years, in others it lasted for several more centuries. This led to a sudden explosion in human population as resources and land became easier to find.

Approx. 9,500 BC: The Interregnum, an effort by some Bete to control the numbers of humans in the world, begins. It ends three thousand years later. The mental scars of this period of time remain in all humans found today.

Approx. 6,000 BC: The failure of the Interregnum, racial hatreds, and other factors combine to start the Bete’s first War of Rage. Every kind of Changing Breed found themselves at each other’s throats, and not for the last time.

Approx. 4,500 BC: Enoch, the legendary great city of vampires, is destroyed through internal strife and the rage of the First One, now being called Caine. The survivors of this destruction spread across the world, eventually forming the Clans that lasted for the next six thousand, five hundred years.

1,510 BC: The oldest surviving written record of interactions between early Traditions. Some were enemies, others were allies, in a loose social structure that stretched through the centuries.

32 AD: The rise of Christianity. In a year, a little-known self-styled prophet’s death would inspire a religion that would eventually rule most of the world.

54 AD: In the writings of a Hermetic scholar, this was the date the dragons began to leave the world behind. Eventually they would be followed by most of the world’s magical beasts, who could not withstand the fading of magic.

1000 AD: Conflicts between Traditions sow the seeds of the Order of Reason, a group of willworkers devoted to discovering a more rational way of manipulating the world. They were helped by many normal and paranormal forces who desired a more stable reality. The next few centuries saw the beginnings of a growing desire in most people for natural philosophy instead of the arcane arts.

1325 AD: The Order of Reason formally states its intention is to make war on mysticism. They began actively fighting with other Traditions and paranormals, as well as promoting the study of natural philosophy, which they soon renamed "science."

Approx. 1400 AD: Due to pressures from the Inquisition and an ongoing revolt by anarchist vampires, several Clans join together in the Camarilla. Within a century, opposing Clans create the Sabbat to oppose them.

1466 AD: After more than a century of struggling against the Order of Reason, the mystic Traditions band together in the Council of Nine for common protection and purpose. The Ascension War is waged for the next four and a half centuries.

1500 AD: With the European discovery of the New World, shapeshifters argue over the possibility of humanity’s expansion and exploitation of these lands. After several decades, the debates become most recent War of Rage, one which simmered slowly over the next three hundred years, only ending in the middle of the 19th century. This war shattered an already fragmented Bete society. Most of the Changing Breed isolated themselves from each other during this time.

1885 AD: The Order of Reason changes its name to the Technocratic Union. The Ascension War continued as it had for the past four centuries, showing no signs of abating.

1941 AD: The United States is attacked by the Japanese, bringing the USA into World War II. At this point, the Bete believe the war is heralding the Apocalypse. Changer birthrates plummet, and many of the elders throw themselves heedlessly into battle. The numbers of the Bete reach an all-time low.

1942 AD: During World War II, Nephandi run rampant, giving rise to real fears that the war would be the end of the world. For the first time since the beginning of the Ascension War, the Traditions and Conventions cooperate in hunting the Nephandi. In three years, they killed or banished almost three-quarters of the dark mages in the world.

1954 AD: Alan Turing discovers the Digital Web, dying in the process.

1977 AD: Dennis Vryce Awakens. He spends the next decade traveling with the Unlikely Brothers cabal, studying magic from many Traditions and fighting evil anywhere he could find it. He goes on to eventually become one of the most powerful mages in history.

1990 AD: Gehenna begins subtly, as the millennia-old Jyhad between elders starts becoming ever more bloody. The next several years sees greater numbers of vampires, more violence, and several major shifts in the political structure of both Camarilla and Sabbat.

1998 AD: The first members of the Lattice of Destiny meet in New Orleans. They face the psychic Reckoning, first signs of Gehenna and eventual Apocalypse of Changers. Unity Gardens is founded to oppose this future. Eventually, they release a massive accumulation of psychic effluvium which was seeping into the very ley lines of the continent.

2002 AD: Captain Paradox, claiming to be from a future in which the Technocratic Union has conquered the world, comes to New Orleans. He sends several of the heroes from this place to the time where they can do the most good.

2003-2004 AD: The final battles of Gehenna. What at first was only several intense battles between vampire Clans and Sects started being reflected in the normal world. The spilling of blood and psychic air of war rouses the Antediluvian vampires. Under their direction, all vampires war in earnest.

The battles soon spill over into the mundane world. Allies and servants of the vampires join in. The backlash of these battles, both psychic and physical, spreads into non-associated humans. War engulfs the world. The Traditions and Conventions work together with the Bete to try to keep the world from ending.

After the end of Gehenna, the Traditions and Conventions cooperated once more to lessen the impact those events had on the memories of the world. Some recalled exactly what happened, but most only remembered the chaos, not the reasons for it. Humanity was able to keep its ignorance of the secret world for a while longer.

2007-2008 AD: The Balancing, which at the time was called the Apocalypse. All the changing breeds are brought together under the leadership of Child-of-Luna in an effort to strike at the Wyrm before its forces become unstoppable.

At great cost of life, the Bete manage to devastate one of the Wyrm’s greatest strongholds in the Umbra, and at the same time provide a template of a sentient mind for the Wyld. Suddenly given the capacity for thought and planning, the Wyld is able to direct its own forces to better oppose the Wyrm. The cosmic forces that were once out of balance are brought back to a more even standing.

2013 AD: In Lawrence, Kansas, three friends are thrust into destiny. The last Seeds containing preserved vampire Blood was stolen from the Progenitors, and the thieves encounters Ray Jour Sage Sinclair and Chris Kaspan. Ray Jour Awakens, Sage Sinclair becomes the first of the new vampires, and Chris Kaspan discovers the secrets of extended life.

The mages who went through time were Caleb Schuller, Caiterina Vryce, Jayne Vryce, Ian Vryce, Tristesse Baptise, and Isobel Xotchil Vryce.
2014 AD: The mages sent forward in time from New Orleans by Captain Paradox arrive in Kansas City. Together with local paranormals, they form the core of the Lattice of Destiny cabal.

On one of their first adventures, the Lattice travel to Wolf 359, making contact with both the Dhilfren and the Quaelenti. Due to this meeting, the Quaelenti decide to keep in communication with humans.

2015 AD: Abas, the most powerful Marauder in history, threatens to rip open a hole in reality, which will lead to the greatest Paradox Storm ever. His rise is opposed by the still-unnamed Lattice of Destiny, who bring together allies from Traditions, Conventions and Bete to fight him.

Later the same year, a Nephandi-directed group plans to crash the Digital Web, plunging the world into darkness. Members of the Lattice cabal uncover these plans and form a coalition to fight the Web Crashers. This battle takes place on the slopes of Mount Qaf, the legendary center of the Digital Web.

Also, other members of the Lattice learn that the Mokole, shapeshifters responsible for holding the memory of the world spirit Gaia, have vanished into the Umbra. Without their return, Gaia will soon forget magic entirely. They visit the Umbral aspects of many of the Sol System’s worlds, and finally return with the Mokole.

2016 AD: The Artemis mission to the Moon is attacked by spirits sent by the Ghost Dance. Captain Russell MacAllister of the Void Engineers manages to keep the mission alive. The success of this mission, even after a terrorist attack, convinces NASA to move ahead on a mission to Mars.

The Judgement of Thunder cabal, the most well-known cabal of the century, plan to destroy Mr. Blanc and other leaders of the Technocracy in Kansas City. The Lattice of Destiny tries to stop the attack, and when pressed, fights alongside the technocrats. This Battle of Bartle Hall is the turning point in relations between Traditions and Technocracy.

During the battle, Toshiro Smith, head of the Judgement of Thunder, nearly reaches Mr. Blanc, and his opposed by Ray Jour. Both are killed in the fight.

Later that year, a radical faction of the Technocracy tries to derail any possibility of peace. Mark Osokori of the NWO and RX242 of the Iteration X join forces to mount an assault on the Lattice’s seat of power. The Technocracy forces come to the aid of the Lattice of Destiny and RX242 is destroyed.

The Lattice of Destiny briefly encounter Kevin, a man from another time who turns out to be a disguised extraterrestial.

2017 AD: Mark Osokori’s Horizon Realm is breached, and the man is brought before trial by the Technocracy. When the man is found guilty and executed, it signals the end of the Ascension War. Both sides begins formal talks to find ways to work together, with Caiterina Vryce of the Lattice participating in the initial summits.

The Ghost Dance puts down their weapons after Caleb Fireheart convinces them their reasons for war have passed.

The Ares mission to Mars is launched on November 4th.

2018 AD: On March 21st, The Hammer of the Stars attacks the Ares mission on Mars. In the ensuing conflict, the Void Engineers and Sons of Ether both show several ships on nationwide television. In the months after this, both Traditions and Technocracy make several attempts to let humanity know about paranormal beings. They are only partially successful before world communications are lost.

The Terv’anar make their first attempt at a ground landing on June 4th. They are stopped by joint forces led by Caleb Fireheart and Jessica Laine. In the battle, Fireheart is claimed by Grandfather Thunder and becomes a spirit of storm.

This is Earth’s last clear victory for the year. The Hammer is sometimes beaten back but causes severe damage each time. Several major cities across the world are invaded or badly damaged. Earth’s minimal space fleet is decimated during the war. Only the arrival of the Quaelenti kept Earth from being overrun. Humanity’s defenders began to learn better ways to combat their enemies, especially with the discovery that the Terv’anar did not use paranormal abilities.

Late in the year, the alien called Kevin is released from a temporal stasis. He explains that he is of the Exoum, an ancient race, and that humanity is unique enough to protect. Kevin is sent on to his people, in the hope that they might return to help.

2019 AD: Earth’s defenders repel the Terv’anar on many fronts, but still slowly lose ground. A desperate plan is formed by the Lattice of Destiny to destroy the Hammer’s mothership. They hesitate to use this plan in the knowledge that the Alai’anar’s other forces would join the war at that point.

Contact with the Digital Web is lost, but thanks to Dante and many others, it remains intact.

The Moebius Circle forms quietly in the summer. The Traditions and Technocracy had been working hand in hand by default at this point, and at first only the leaders of these groups were aware of the unification.

The Terv’anar mothership comes within the orbit of Mars in October. The Lattice launches their assault, sneaking a small group into the mothership to blind some sensors, while a stealth-covered bomb is brought to the ship. Major Autumn Voss pilots the bomb through the Terv’anar defenses and ignites it in the largest explosion ever created by humanity.

The Alai’anar’s other forces are stunned by this loss, and spend the next few months forming a response.

2020 AD: The Alai’anar decide to wipe out humanity once and for all. They send their remaining forces, including two motherships, into the Sol System for this purpose. When the enemy reached the orbit of Jupiter, the Exoum arrived. They destroyed one-half of the Alai’anar fleet in a few hours, allowing the others to escape as a warning to the rest of the empire.

Humanity is left to pick up the pieces. The Moebius Circle and the UN start organizing the survivors of the war to rebuild.

2022 AD: Mr. Blanc dies.

2023 AD: Last known remnants of the Hammer’s forces are rooted out and destroyed in China by the reborn Ghost Dance.

2025 AD: The UN is made official world government. The true reformation of the world starts, as international commerce and cooperation begins in earnest.

2030 AD: The Moebius Circle is made an official arm of the UN. Plans are made to rebuild Washington D.C., London, Moscow and Tokyo.

2033 AD: Kainen Vrachnos creates the Moebius Circle’s Operations Branch.

2035 AD: At the behest of the USA, the UN redoubles reconstruction efforts in Washington D.C. Work slows in other cities, but the UN believes that a shining example of renewal is needed sooner rather than later.

2039 AD: Washington D.C. is declared reborn. The government of the USA moves from Philadelphia to D.C. The Operations Branch base in the city becomes the Circle’s world headquarters.

2040 AD: Present time
