Those Who Stand at Reality's Edge

Moebius Circle

The promise of the Lattice of Destiny was a world in which all paradigms would be tolerated, the chance for beliefs to thrive or fade away on their own merits, and above all else, all philosophies would be respected by everyone.

The world isn’t there yet, but the Moebius Circle is devoted to making the promise into reality. Formed out of necessity during the Hammer War, it now exists simply because the member groups have seen the power in working together. Most of the members and all of the leadership are idealists, some of whom were personally witness to the Lattice visions, or themselves members of the Lattice of Destiny cabal.

The Moebius Circle is comprised of willworkers who identified themselves as either part of the Circle of Nine Traditions or the Technocratic Union, representatives of the vampires, the Bete, and the Aware, paranormals who do not fit in the normal categories. In an effort to overcome past prejudices, the Circle officially refers to all of these groups as Orders.

The Leadership Council of the Moebius Circle is composed of the respected names of each Orders, and at times, the leaders of the Orders themselves. Each Order is given a great deal of leeway in deciding their own internal structure, chain of command, training conditions, and methods of conduct. However, the Orders are also expected to meet the standards of the Code of Destiny on which the Circle is founded.

There are some clashes between the Orders, but most of them are muted and little more than loud arguments over philosophy. Any confrontation that becomes violent is punished quickly and severely. There are many forms of punishment, to mandatory courses in the history of the Ascension War and the harm it caused, to exile from the Circle or, if all else fails, from this dimension entirely.

While the Council tries to de-emphasize the old divisions between paranormals, most of the Orders still refer to themselves as Traditions, Conventions and so on. The leaders of the Orders are all old enough to remember a time before the Moebius Circle, and some things are hard to forget.

The only true dividing line which even the Code of Destiny cannot ignore is between mystic and technomantic paradigms. While the two can work together and sometimes even combined by rare individuals, this is still the essence of difference within the Circle.

Akashic Brotherhood

Grand Master: Kozori-sensei. Representative: Erica Chong.

The Akashic Brotherhood is trying to overcome an internal struggle between the Asian members over the issue of China’s dominance. Outwardly, the Akashics have found greater acceptance worldwide through interest in the principles of Zen philosophy and Taoism. The popularity of the martial arts is also on the rise again, and schools known to be connected to the Akashic Order are very popular.

Among the UN and other troops, Akashic Brothers are given great respect, often accorded privileges due to those of higher rank or clearance. The best and brightest of the world’s greatest militaries hope to train under Akashic teachers. Several of the Order’s recent recruits come from military or police forces.

Assembly of Night

Judge: Reese Dawson or Sage Sinclair. Representatives: Whomever is not serving as Judge.

This Order garners more suspicion and concern than any other. The Assembly causes many to fear the Circle’s inclusion of all paranormals. The Assembly chose the name for its Order specifically to keep from using the word "vampires," which is what everyone knows they are. The world finds it hard to forget Gehenna, or the millennia of fear and predation before that event. Even within the Moebius Circle, there are many who closely watch the Assembly, wary of what they may choose to become.

Despite the suspicion among the rank and file, the Leadership Council has nothing but respect for the Judge and Representative from the Assembly, and consider the vampires valuable assets.

Bete

Voice of Gaia: Theresa Winter-Sky Representative: Lancelot Fire-Blood.

Part animal, part human, and part spirit, the shapeshifters are the most unusual members of the Circle. They divide themselves between the major species of Bastet, Corax, Garou, Gurhal, Mokole, Ratkin and Rokea. Each of these Changing Breeds has their own complex social structures, all of them several millennia old. It is only with some reluctance have they agreed to form their own council of the most influential members of each Breed. This council in turn makes the desires of the shifters known to the Moebius Circle. It goes without saying that sometimes the message is very muddled by the time it reaches Lancelot Fire-Blood.

Still, the Bete have had to come further than almost any other group to join the Moebius Circle. Once they were the most implacable and dangerous of foes to both the vampires and the Technocracy. Now they consider these groups allies, although that alliance can be very tense on both sides. The Moebius Circle is willing to compromise a lot with the Bete to keep their legendary tempers in check.

Celestial Chorus

Pontifex Maximus: Mai Tsin Representative: Jayne Richards

One of the backbones of the Moebius Circle, the Chorus has changed subtly but profoundly over the years. Once considered the self-appointed keepers of religious virtue, the Chorus has transformed itself into a model of tolerance and inclusion. The Celestial Chorus was one of the architects for the Moebius Circle and still provides a large percentage of the Circle’s instructors and recruiters.

The other Orders generally deal well with the Chorus, but there are still old grudges in the way. Two things which still rankle is the Chorus’ sometimes overstated religious ideals and the fact that some Choristers apparently consider themselves the only ones who truly understand the message of the Lattice visions.

Children of Ether

Chief Researcher: Daniel Reisender Representative: Lu Ji-yong

The Children of Ether underwent massive changes during and after the Hammer War. Once a loose collection of scientists who spent more time debating esoteric theories than actually doing anything as a group, the Etherites were forced to come together as a cohesive whole. Under the leadership of Alexandra Hastings and Daniel Reisender, the former Sons of Ether reinvented themselves as the most advanced research and development corporation in history. Together they tackled the mysteries of Terv’anar technology and found ways to prevent mass starvation and rampant disease in the lean years after the war.

The Children of Ether is now balanced between several individual research groups and a collective unit with a directed purpose. Space is the primary endeavor of the Order, occupying most of their effort. Over half of the Order are designing new ships, serving in the Fleet, or investigating the mysteries of space.

Cult of Ecstasy

Mistress of Revels: Marianne Representative: Rosalind Blossom.

The Cult is perhaps the least-changed of the Orders. The group still has an informal organization, which mostly just serves to maintain safehouses, teach new recruits, and direct social aid efforts. When the Moebius Circle was being formed, Marianne smiled to herself and asked what had taken them so long.

The Cult’s role in the Circle appears to be that of the conscience. They have and still do focus on the normal humans of the world over the paranormals, and try to remind others to do the same.

Dreamspeakers

Chief Shaman: Mitch Ironhorse Representative: Terry Kalapekawa

The Dreamspeakers have, ironically, grown to larger numbers than ever before after joining the Moebius Circle. Many were interested in shamanism and the spirit world but were put off by the undertone of anger and resentment in the Dreamspeakers. Now that the worst of that anger is gone, the Order is finding recruits in the most unlikely of places, from children of ruins who pray to a thousand urban spirits for protection, to those who deal with computers every day and know the quirky nature of gremlins and information spiders.

Dreamspeakers are also highly valued for their connection to the spirit world, often being asked to serve a guides or instructors in the ways of the other dimensions. The Order’s close allegiance with the Bete is also a valuable asset. However, some worry that the Ghost Dance is just the military arm of the Dreamspeakers, striking where the Circle will not go. There are those in the Circle who watch the Dreamspeakers closely for signs of such an alliance.

Euthanatos

Master of Fates: Asa Vandyamir Representative: Kainen Vrachnos

Silent and secretive, the Euthanatos were once the least-trusted of the Traditions. In the years just before the Hammer War, an unlikely alliance with the Celestial Chorus and the Order of Hermes brought the Euthanatos into a position of leadership. Their expertise was called on to root out corruption and the weaknesses in the Council of Nine. Soon after that, the Euthanatos were being asked to help protect the Traditions from themselves as well as betrayal by outsiders.

When the Moebius Circle formed, the Euthanatos made sure all parties were dealing with each other honestly. They also served as the security force of the Circle, a role which they’ve never relinquished. The Euthanatos make up the majority of the Operations Branch, training new recruits and finding the problems which require their attention. While it is never directly stated, the Orders understand that the Euthanatos also watch to see that the Moebius Circle is heeding the dictates of the Code of Destiny.

Iteration X

Chief Technological Officer: Lawrence Sorenson. Representative: Dexter Allan.

This Order went from one of the most-hated willworker groups to the one of the most-loved after the War. Iteration X inventions helped untold thousands survive the Hammer War, and even today soldiers and police officers across the world regularly give thanks to the Order. The Moebius Circle refuses to let Iteration X forget their worst excesses of the latter half of the 20th century, which earned them so much hatred. But the Circle is also willing to let the Order make up for its past sins. From improving ship weapons and armor to making sure that machines are more efficient and safer than ever before, Iteration X has striven to overcome its past.

Despite the constant scrutiny of the other Orders, Iteration X has been invaluable to the Circle and indeed, to the world. Most of the equipment now used by US or UN troops was developed with the help of Iteration X, and there would be no colonies in space if not for this Order.

New World Union

Chief of Global Operations: Janice Kriegold. Representative and Current Head of the Moebius Circle: Jessica Laine.

While most of the other Orders had to change in some way to fit into the Circle, the former New World Order only seemed to need to pick a new name. The masters of administration and media, the NWU quickly stepped into a similar role for the Circle. They kept the 15 other Orders from rubbing each other the wrong way and managed to find ways to include each one’s own leadership into the greater organization of the Circle. They created the public image of the Circle to win over the world. They turned out to be even better suited to dealing with the public fact of magic than they once had been with keeping the secret of the paranormals world.

The NWU currently provides the administration of the Moebius Circle. There are several who fear the NWU is simply manipulating the entire Circle for their own ends, but anyone who studies the situation can see that there is little danger of this occurring. Even the NWU isn’t able to direct all the desires of the other Orders to their own ends.

Order of Hermes

Primus Magister: Alfonse Oroborous. Representative: Tina Gardener.

Long believed to be pompous and arrogant mages, the Order of Hermes was one of the least-respected Traditions. But Hermetics had a keen sense of purpose and firepower to spare. When the Hammer War started they were among the first and greatest warriors for humanity’s cause. Their paradigm found many converts among those who believed the universe was ruled by laws but found math and physics cold and unappealing. The Hermetics suffered great losses but had almost as many recruits, and was one of the largest Orders at the end of the War.

The Order currently spends most of its effort in probing the hidden places of this world and others. Wastelands, ruins, and more mysterious places have returned to Earth, and the Order of Hermes is on the forefront of exploring these areas. They’ve also sent expeditions both into the Umbra and space, looking for the wonders of other planets and in hopes of finding Realms that were lost during the war.

Progenitors

Chief of Medicine: Mary Baker Representative: Don Carmichael

Long feared by the Traditions, the Progenitors were always one of the most respected Conventions within the Technocratic Union. Their techniques and discoveries have done more to better lives than anything provided by any other Tradition or Convention. Progenitor doctors have fought against disease, the failings of human bodies, and needless suffering for their entire history. Their struggles were made public during the Hammer War, when Progenitors died in droves trying to preserve the lives of humanity’s defenders.

The Terv’anar soon directed attacks at medical crews, decimating normal and paranormal physicians alike. At the end of the War, the Progenitors barely numbered in the hundreds. The Moebius Circle immediately sought out new recruits and found few in the early years. Slowly, young students became available, and more joined them over time. In an effort to find more members, Progenitors have been made faculty in every major medical school. The Order is still too small, but their ranks are finally swelling.

Ranks of the Aware

President: Mark Seven Representative: Patrick Gardner.

The Aware are barely a cohesive group. They are the other beings which stood in the cracks beside the vampires, Bete and willworkers who have dominated the past century. Psychics and linear mages, empowered citizens and vessels of spiritual power, sentient machines and mythical beasts, the Aware were often caught up in the struggles of their more well-known cousins. Finally brought together by the Moebius Circle, the Aware are still in search of a common identity. Thus far, it’s slow in coming.

The Aware often find closer allegiances with the other Orders than themselves, and so commonly support their efforts rather than pursuing their own agenda. A few squads are composed entirely of Aware agents, with uneven results so far.

Syndicate

Chief Financial Officer: Alene Mann. Representative: Ben Durdin.

To put it simply, the Moebius Council is the richest organization in the world. The Circle’s finances come entirely from the Syndicate, who in many ways are responsible for the existence of a global economy. The Syndicate has always been more occupied with resources and funds than living, breathing people, but even they were forced to face a new world during the Hammer War. They made it possible for the right groups to have the right resources at the right time, so that humanity would have ships, weapons and defenses to face the invaders. Even then, the Syndicate was motivated more by risk and reward than by heroic inspiration.

While the Moebius Circle does what it can to turn the Syndicate’s efforts to helping the world, the Order’s own leadership remains focused on what it does best. They deal with money. Despite this intransigency, the urge for a better world is starting to infect the younger members of this Order, which gives many observers hope for the future.

Verbena

High Priestess: Magrethe. Representative: William Frye.

The self-appointed guardians of the natural world, the Verbena are the most insular Order in the Circle. They had a large part in keeping the Terv’anar out of the wilds of the Earth, and hunted down hundreds of ground troops left behind after the end of the war. But the Verbena Representative has had little to say in Council and the Order does not divert many of their own members to Circle efforts.

Careful investigation reveals that the Verbena are not so much ignoring the mission of the Moebius Circle as they have already chosen their own part in that mission and see no need to talk about it. They are trying to reclaim the wild areas lost during the war or taken by the Wyrm during the aftermath. More importantly, in their eyes, they are working to make certain that the UN will not exploit the world’s natural resources heedlessly.

Virtual Adepts

The Elite: Samantha Collingsworth Representative: Phoenix

One of the most progressive and forward-looking Traditions, ironically the VAs opposed the creation of the Moebius Circle more than anyone else. They remembered each of the Technocracy’s worst crimes, and in a culture that rewarded anger and brash action they fostered that resentment. Still, several events of the 2010’s leading up to the Hammer War forced them to reevaluate their stance. The turning point came in the effort to keep the Digital Web intact, when Technocracy and Traditions had to work together more than once to preserve the realm. When the fabled Dante himself brought the Web back to the world, he only did so with a ritual that included every willworking hacker he could find, regardless of affiliation. The Virtual Adepts had to grudgingly accept that things had truly changed.

Now the Virtual Adepts oversee the Digital Web for the Moebius Circle, with help from Iteration X, NWU, and Children of Ether. They are responsible for the clear communications in the Circle and between the member nations of the U.N. In addition, many VA researchers are looking into ways to expand the Web into space-borne systems.

Void Engineers

General of the Fleet: Al Werner. Representative: Russell MacAllister.

Perhaps the most popular of the Orders, the Void Engineers are favorites among young and old alike. There are many who believe the VEs were the truest heroes of the Hammer War, keeping Earth alive long enough that the Lattice of Destiny could destroy the Terv’anar mothership and bring the Exoum to humanity’s aid. The Void Engineers themselves enjoy some of the adulation but make efforts to point out the contributions of everyone else who participated in the war. Still, movies, books and games abound in which the noble Void Engineers are all that stand between the Earth and a hostile universe.

The Moebius Circle willingly exploits the fame of the VEs, but does not expect it to last forever. The NWU works hard to try to keep the other Orders from resenting the Void Engineers too much, with uncertain results.

Orphans and Solitaires

Some people just won’t fit in. Sometimes it’s because they have already made up their minds, sometimes they’re just so different no one can understand them, and other times it’s because they don’t know what they’re looking for.

Orphans are willworkers who are searching for a paradigm. They do have some set beliefs and they can alter reality with basic methods, but these methods and beliefs sometimes change. They borrow from others if it seems like they have good ideas, they try to adapt their methods to fit in, but somehow they just have trouble making it work. It is very rare for a willworker to remain an Orphan for too long; they either make up their minds and become Solitaires, they come across a group where they will fit in, or they die.

Solitaires, on the other hand, already know what they believe and how those beliefs change the world. They do not seek new answers, although they aren’t opposed to learning if they find something that fits their paradigms. Their paradigms rarely fit in to other groups, but can be quite willing to work with them. Most Solitaires have always struck out on their own, but some come to the lifestyle from an established group.

Ghost Dance

The second-largest gathering of paranormals in the world, the Ghost Dance was once seen as the enemies of both the Council of Nine Traditions and the Technocratic Union. Now the Ghost Dance avoids any sort of direct dealings, hostile or otherwise, with the Moebius Circle whenever possible.

Where the Circle is based on hope and a dream of the future, the Ghost Dance is only concerned with the world as it is today. Most Ghost Dancers are veterans of a hundred battles, some with careers stretching into the previous century. They see the world as a dangerous place where monsters both paranormal and ordinary can be found all too easily. The Ghost Dance directs its Hunter Packs where few others are willing to go, to face the darkness and destroy it when possible. Ghost Dancers enter wastelands and ruins freely, even when Moebius Circle teams are met with resistance. The Dancers often seek out Wyrmpits and Shallows where the dead can return to the Earth.

Ghost Dancers are largely made up of former Dreamspeakers, Verbena, and Bete who do not agree with the ideals of the Moebius Circle. There are other kinds of members, paranormal or ordinary, but each new member must prove his loyalty, his bravery, his prowess and his belief in the Ghost Dance before he is allowed to hunt.

In most cases, the Ghost Dance will not attack agents of the Circle except to defend themselves, and in fact have been known to provide assistance when it’s required. In general, it is the Circle who ends up helping the Dancers, who have already identified the problem and were preparing to deal with it as emphatically as possible. There are instances of hostilities between the Dance and the Circle, but only when neither side was willing to compromise. If the Ghost Dancers can avoid Circle agents, they will. The Circle’s agents are advised to follow their example.

Adversaries

There are almost too many enemies to list here. The Nephandi and their ilk are still an ever present threat. Many of the ruined places of the world give them places to work their evils. The Wyrm’s own forces breed in wastelands and ruins, spreading out like a plague. It is said that in some of the worst areas, such as the Black Sands in the Mongol Desert or Old Mexico City are direct portals to the darker dimensions.

Marauders haunt the world in greater numbers than ever. Many of them are living out their own horrors from a Hammer War that will never end for them, or still perceive a world torn apart by the Ascension War, or even deeper madness that is never understood. They often appear at the edges between civilization and chaos, where people are barely managing to survive. These appearances are always traumatic. The Circle has lost more agents than it cares to admit to the insanity of the Maruaders.

There are also the Ramaas Ka and their continuing silent war against humans. In the past twenty years, the Ramaas Ka have attacked humans either on Earth or in space more often than in the entire century previously. The presence of Exoum in the Sol System seems to have angered this race more than ever.

On the Digital Web, there are other growing threats. Glitchstorms occasionally sweep through sectors, disrupting everything in their path. Cybercults are springing up, some of them preaching the sacrifice of humans to power the Web. The Spider Queen’s spies spread through the virtual world, burrowing into all secrets they can find. And there are hints that at least attempt to bring the Web to other worlds touched on something ancient and dark in the vastness of cyberspace.

In the normal world, there are dozens of warlords ruling their own fiefdoms, scavengers prowling the wastelands, movements such as the Chosen who believe the Hammer War was a judgement against humanity, and the danger of some leader deciding to spread conquest and war.

Who’s Who

Fame is a fickle thing. Now that the world knows of paranormals, some people who were once able to work in relative obscurity are plagued by fans, autograph seekers, and the media. Here are the biggest names in paranormal matters today.

An Teine: One of the most respected and feared figures on the Digital Web. An Teine means "the Flame," and anyone who crosses this mysterious person gets burned. An Teine polices the fringes of the Web society, seeking out those who prey on others either electronically or physically. She is an implacable hunter, and ruthless in dealing with her prey. She rarely kills, preferring to burn out systems and leaving behind physical or mental scars as a reminder. The Virtual Adepts consider her a rogue, one whose goals are admirable but whose methods leave a lot to be desired. Still, no one has been able to mount a serious opposition to An Teine, not even Redemption or the Silicon Angel.

Damian Vryce: The child of two of the most famous of the past century, Damian Vryce is in many ways considered the apparent heir to the leadership of the Moebius Circle. Damian was born to power, the son of Dennis Vryce, believed by many to be one of the most powerful mages in history, and Caiterina Vryce who created Unity Gardens, shattered the Celestial Chorus’ Curia and rebuilt it, and helped lead the Lattice of Destiny against the Terv’anar.

Damian’s education in magic came from some of the giants of the century, from Caleb Fireheart to Ray Jour to Transient Spike to Jessica Laine. He awakened at the age of 8, after the start of the Hammer War, and learned to fight from the best warriors of the conflict.

Many believed that Damian’s destiny would put him at the head of the Circle, following in his parents’ footsteps to help direct humanity to a finer world. But Damian resisted this fate, even defying his own parents to seek his own path. When the elder Vryces vanished in 2030, Damian left the Moebius Circle behind entirely. He declared his independence from destiny and dropped out of sight for many years. When he resurfaced, he was a wandering hero, never staying in one place for long, never letting himself get tied down by any one place, person, or organization. He has helped Circle agents and Ghost Dancers alike. He’s been seen fighting would-be conquerors in South America and Wyrm beasts in the ruins of Chicago, then later seen dealing with nascent crime organizations in Cochran City.

Damian Vryce’s power is respected by anyone who has met him, but many doubt if he’s even come close to his full potential.

General Kainen Vrachnos: The head of the Moebius Circle’s Operations Branch, Kainen is seen by many as a cross between General Patton and Juan Marquez. He’s a famous warrior, veteran of a thousand battles against enemies as varied as barrabi, Terv’anar, Black Spiral Dancers, and hordes of frenzied vampires. It is said that even the Bete respect the martial prowess of Vrachnos.

Those who work for the man find him to be more easy-going than his reputation suggests. While he demands the best from his agents, he also is an understanding man who knows how to keep his people healthy and efficient. He has a natural instinct for where the Operations Branch needs to get involved, and often wins his people’s respect by going into the field with them on the most dangerous missions.

Kassar Painbringer: A name that appeared in Russia almost a decade ago, the Painbringer was said to be an utterly ruthless killer carving out his own kingdom in central Asia. Investigation into the rumors found a series of brutal deaths, but no sign of a would-be warlord. The stories did not stop, and Kassar’s name cropped up on every continent but Antarctica. He was said to be an unstoppable warrior, able to slaughter hundreds of men with his bare hands. He’s been spotted at all of the worst battles of the past decade, never with any solid proof of his existence.

However, the Circle is worried about this myth. They know that legends rarely exist without some inspiration, and that it’s quite possible that if no Painbringer existed before, one could rise up to fill the role created by belief.

Lisa Smith: She has only recently become famous. A skilled deep-cover agent working for the Operations Branch, Smith excelled at infiltration of enemy organizations and capturing specific targets. A journalist stumbled over her during one such assignment in China that had gone wrong. She kept him alive in through some very nasty firefights, but his gratitude did not stop him from blowing her cover.

Lisa Smith has been forced to act as an instructor for the past year, as her unwelcome fame makes it impossible for her to do her work. There is a rumor in Operations that Smith is contemplating a radical change to let her return to deep-cover.

Patrick Gardener: Without a doubt the most well-known of the Aware, and a hero in his own right. He studied marital arts under the legendary Ray Jour, discovered the linear magic of an Akashic Brotherhood group known as the Kiasaka, became a vigilante protecting ordinary people from the supernatural in the streets of several cities, and later led a citizen’s brigade against the Terv’anar.

Patrick did not immediately join the Moebius Circle after the war. He spent the ‘20’s hunting down Terv’anar ground troops, and went to St. Louis to help found a gang to resist the more predatory groups of the ruin. He finally was recruited by Mark Seven in 2031. He heads the oldest of the Hazard Squads, represents the Aware on the Leadership Council, and also acts an instructor for new recruits. When presented with truly dire situations, Patrick calls on his sister Tina for help.

Reese Dawson: One of the founding members of the Assembly of Night, Reese Dawson is considered the most fearsome fighters in the world. As a member of the Lattice of Destiny, Reese was a warrior of great repute, and also worked to win a place for vampires among those who would change the world. She was named the leaders of the vampires before the War, while they slowly developed their new organization. She found the lost first vampire of the new breed, Sage Sinclair, and rehabilitated him from his madness. Together, the two of them directed the vampires in the War for Earth. She and her vampires were considered responsible for some of the greatest ground victories of the war.

After the Moebius Circle formed, she and Sage decided to trade off representation on the Leadership Council. One serves as representative for a year while the other acts as Judge of the Assembly, then they trade roles.

General of the Fleet Russell MacAllister (retired): Believed by many to be the greatest hero of the Hammer War, General MacAllister has long been uncomfortable with his fame. It is said that his strategies and leadership kept the Terv’anar at bay in space, which allowed the Lattice and others the chance to mount a counterstrike against the Hammer’s mothership. Russell is soft-spoken in interviews, giving credit to everyone but himself. He makes a point to honor those who fell during the war every year, and is tenth-year Victory Day speech at the statue of Autumn Voss is considered one of the best commentaries on the war as a whole.

MacAllister’s fame is from the Hammer War, but he publicly states that the deeds he takes the most pride in are from the years afterward, when he helped in the formation of UNASA and the Moebius Circle. Indeed, many historians say that Russell was directly responsible for the cooperation between the VEs, CoEs and normal space agencies in the creation of UNASA.

Despite his retirement from the Fleet, Russell still represents the Void Engineers on the Leadership Council.

Sal 2K: The second-in-command of the Virtual Adepts, Sal 2K is said to have been trained by the reclusive Transient Spike. She is responsible for directing teams of Virtual Adepts to deal with various problems, as well as advanced training for Circle recruits. Sal2K has well-placed friends in every other Order and the Ghost Dance.

She-Who-Watches: The Bete’s most infamous font of information, She-Who-Watches is believed to be a Corax given the job of keeping tabs on every other paranormal in the world. No one knows how she gets her data; it’s impossible she could personally watch everyone and everything by herself. Yet she always knows the answer to every question. While She-Who-Watches certainly has the information, not everyone can afford the prices she will charge for it.

Spider Queen: A disturbing trend on the Digital Web is that of online cults, people who gather together to worship and serve cyberdeities. The Spider Queen’s Web of Fate is the most successful of these cults in recent days. Her followers are spies and hackers, devoted to the cause of giving her access to the whole of human knowledge. The Queen does not care to battle with the established leaders of the Web, but has been known to fight fiercely when attacked. There are a hundred theories about who the Spider Queen truly is, how far her web already reaches, and what she intends to do with the information she collects.

Ta’hai Iceflame: The wife of the legendary Caleb Fireheart, Ta’hai was a skilled warrior and tactician in her own right before the War. Some say she trained Khalil Darque, and that she taught Damian Vryce the arts of war. After the Hammer War, she sought out the former allies and respected enemies of Caleb, spending years to bring them all together. She guided them into the creation of the new Ghost Dance. Ta’hai sent the Dancers to strike at the evil things hiding in the shadows of the world. Ta’hai rarely enters battle these days, but she is a talented strategist and trains her soldiers to a level of ability envied by many special forces. Ta’hai shows no desire to make the Moebius Circle into her enemies, but she has been eloquently critical of some of the Circle’s more naïve notions.

Tina Gardener: The sister of Patrick Gardener, and like him, considered one of the most effective warriors in the Moebius Circle. Tina has an innate grasp of energy, and she’s had the benefit of some of the greatest mages in the Circle to train her in the use of power. She leads a Hazard Squad for the Operations Branch and often goes on missions by herself. Tina devotes most of her attention to ruins and wastelands, trying to bring down those who would exploit the helpless and weak.

Despite her effectiveness, Tina is kept on a short leash by Kainen Vrachnos, who knows just how thin the line is between righteous anger and destructive rage. No one really wants to see what Tina is capable of doing if she loses control. Only her brother seems unafraid of her wrath.

Wind-of-Death: The most infamous of Wyrm’s servants loose on the world today. Wind-of-Death is believed to be a Black Spiral Dancer invested with the power of several demon pacts. He made the Nevada Wastes his personal hunting grounds, and has lately been spotted testing the strength of the Amazon jungle and Unity Gardens both. He occasionally travels to other continents, spreading death in his wake. Some in the Circle believe he’s slowly gathering an army of the Wyrm, but are uncertain how many soldiers he’s already recruited.

Wong Li-yu: A legendary Akashic Brother who wanders Asia. He opposes the excesses of the Chinese government as well as the predations of various monsters. Many believe Wong Li-yu is the descendent of the famous Wong Fei-hung. Wong Li-yu is often seen as the voice of the common people in Chung Kuo. The leaders of the empire consider this man to be one of their greatest threats, and call on the Moebius Circle to control him. So far, the Circle has either been unable to find him or unwilling to do anything about him.
