5 & 6 Speed Swap Info.

There are plenty of options to consider when doing this swap, and we see TONS of questions on various message boards looking for information. Since we were already using a late-model engine, it greatly simplified the process for our swap. The pages and information that follow will attempt to cover some of the variables.

The swap was a fairly easy process. Mileage increased from 17mpg to over 21mpg, including a best tank of 23.8mpg. Even with the tiny 16 gallon tank, we can now travel over 300 miles between fill ups! The overdrive 5th gear has enabled us to reduce our 70 mph cruising engine speed from 3200rpm to just over 2000rpm. Even with a 3.25 rear gear, traction is now a problem due to the increased torque multiplication from the T5 steeper 1st gear.

We're using a 1991 5.0 Mustang T-5 transmission, tag #1352-199, that's rated for up to 300ft-lbs of torque. Included in the transmission package are a T-5 bell housing, resurfaced 50 oz flywheel, King Cobra clutch, Hurst shifter, throwout fork, and blockplate. We obtained a 65/66 Mustang clutch pedal set from Ebay. We've also added a steel input bearing retainer. The cross member was sourced from Ron Morris Performance. To actuate to the clutch, we're using a hydraulic master/slave setup from JMC.

We've broken the swap down into 6 basic sections. You can click on the following, or follow the tabs on the left side of the page.

Pedals - Covers the pedal and pedal pad changes.

Linkage - Hydraulic, Hydraulic Bearing, Cable, or Z-bar.

Clutch - Bell housing, Flywheel, Clutch, Bearings

Transmission - T5, Tremec, 6-speeds.

Shifters - Shifters, Floor Modification, Shifter Sticks, Boots.

Miscellaneous - Starter, Cross member, Speedo Cable, Neutral Switch, Drive shaft.

If your car already has a 3 or 4 speed manual transmission, the job is a WHOLE lot easier than converting from an automatic. Use your original bell housing, flywheel, linkage & clutch and install an adapter plate. You'll need an adapter plate since the bolt pattern is different and the T-5 input shaft is longer. Make sure to purchase correct adapter plate depending whether you have a five bolt bell housing or six bolt bell housing. If you wish, you CAN changeover to other clutch types or linkage types. Just follow the appropriate section(s). You will need to change the cross member, yoke, and speedometer cable, as well as possible drive shaft modifications.
