T5 Transmission Information - generally, the later, the better / stronger the transmission will be. 90-93 Mustang T5's are preferred for most applications, as they are readily available, and pretty strong. New T5Z's can be had at around $1000, and are the strongest "factory" T5's, plus include the desirable 2.95 first gear. On a used transmission, you'll need the number off of the metal tag bolted to the case to determine which transmission you're looking at - Here's the chart. If the tag is missing, the #'s stamped into the case or tail shaft will NOT help!

You might also wish to check out "The Manual Transmission Manual" for more information on the various transmission options. That page also includes links to the rebuild manuals for each!

The T5 is the "best" fit for 65/66 cars. The transmission tunnel is fairly "tight". There have been some people who have successfully used Tremec's in 65/66 cars without tunnel modifications, while others report driveline issues. Sometime, a pinion angle adjustment will minimize problems, while others have had more severe issues. You really don't want the engine tilted more than 4*... 67-up cars have more room & more choices! Here's a good article on modifying the transmission tunnel.

Our "used" transmission turned out to be a "whiney piece of junk", so a rebuild had to be done. We found an EXCELLENT source for T5 parts in Hanlon Motorsports. Our research has found 3 items that can greatly increase the durability of a T5 transmission: a steel bearing retainer, a positive-stop shifter, and premium synthetic fluids! We're using all three.

Notes: WR = Wide Ratio, CR = Close Ratio, TL = Toploader

Most people regard optimum overall first gear ratio as somewhere in the range of 9:1 to 11:1. Multiply the transmission's 1st gear X your rear gear to get this number.
