Domestic
Violence is the #1 public health risk to
adult women in the U.S.
More
babies are now born with birth defects as a result
of the mother being battered during pregnancy than
from the combination of all diseases and illnesses for which
we now immunize pregnant women. |
Women's
Transitional Care Services, Inc. provides safe-shelter, peer
counseling, advocacy and other services to survivors of domestic
violence in Douglas, Franklin, and southern Jefferson counties.
Founded
in 1976, WTCS was the first battered woman's shelter in Kansas.
WTCS provides over 274 women and children with shelter and
services every year.
WTCS
works towards peace in the world by elimination of violence
in our communities. Therefore, WTCS is dedicated to the empowerment
of women and children, the creation of peaceful safe space;
the promotion of equality and respect for all people; the
appreciation of difference; and the social action necessary
to achieve these goals.
WTCS' philosophy and service approach celebrate the potential
for a safe, nurturing and joyous world as realized in the
courage of each survivor as she works towards health and healing
in her own life.
WTCS does not discriminate with regard to race, religion,
age, sexual orientation, national/ethnic origin, marital status,
ability, or socioeconomic status.
WTCS believes in the empowerment of survivors of domestic
abuse. To the extent possible, all WTCS services are based
on the empowerment philosophy. Some of the components of empowerment
include: believing that the woman is the expert in her own
experience; offering peer counseling, support, resources and
referrals; and providing information on domestic violence.
